Have you replaced anything on the xbox, or done any other work to it? If you replaced the original DVD drive with another one that is not "married" to the motherboard, it will not play game discs. The motherboard and DVD drive share a key, it is different for every system. If the DVD drive was replaced, here's a write-up that gives you some options on how to put the original key on your new DVD drive so that you can play games on it again.

ehart's solution worked for me. I just swapped out the board of the old drive and put it into the new one. Made sure to also swap out the motor and sensor wired in, that way i didn't have to desolder and resolder the pins. Overall, took me about 15 minutes.

i found out .thats if you havent changed any thing .that theres two small scews on the back of the lazer give them a small turn counter clock wise just a hair . and that did the trick for me it was ez ..and it shock the #^^# out of me. now my son can play again ..just a stanger Gary

thank you so much I know this post is old but I had the same problem and you fixed it!
I wanted this to work so bad but unfortunately it did not. My son got an original xbox 360 from a relative that has been in storage. He updated the os to the latest version and then the fun started. The xbox will play every ORIGINAL xbox game but not a single 360 game, it will play dvd's and cd's as well.
I asked if they had tried to replace the optical drive knowing abuot the board and key but they said no. So my son and I were the first ones to open the xbox 360, it looked like it too, as it was very dirty inside.
we tried every fix we could find, music cd, screw adjustment, new square belt, the board even looks perfect as well as the cables. We tend to think it is a software issue not hardware. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thank you in advance.
