Dead display with no faint image but working DVI output.

MacBook Pro 15" 2522 Core Duo Model A1150

A while ago, while trying to install Ubuntu, I noticed that my Mac took a long time to start up immediately after installation, and heated up so much that it almost felt scalding. The display slowly dimmed, then went out. I tried shining a flashlight behind the screen to see if it was just the backlight, but I saw no faint image.

The DVI port, however, works great. I can attach an external monitor, but in System Profiler, my mac doesn't even recognized that there is a built in display attached to it.

Does it need a new inverter cable? Monitor? Logic board?

Not the logic board or GPU (because an external monitor works) but your inverter, cable or LCD is shot.

Check the cable first for nicks and shorts - they generally go bad more often than the inverter. If the cable looks good your could replace the inverter (less costly than an LCD) - but if that doesn't fix the problem you have a bad backlight or LCD.

Backlights by themselves are not a DIY repair... it's easier to replace the entire LCD. Work in increments and have an idea of how much you are willing to invest before you part this out.

The first thing I would check is why it's heating up. Take the screws out of the top case as see if the fans are running. Here's how: MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150 Right Fan Replacement

See just how dirty it is as you may need to reapply thermal paste. Since I'm pretty sure your don't have replacement parts for the inverter, inverter cable or LCD, you might consider a professional repair on this one.

I've been looking to re-apply thermal paste after seeing alot of articles of the poor thermal paste activation during the initial manufacturing process. I'll try all of these ideas, hopefully it's the inverter! Thanks!
