No Audio From Speakers or Headphones

History

Recently lost audio on my PowerBook. Have done many tests and it appears to be a hardware failure.

Problems:

No sound from built-in speakers

No sound from headphone jack

Keyboard volume is slow

When system prefs audio is open, Sound out/built-in Audio is not available

When adjusting volume and viewing audio prefs, sound balance toggles right and left.

Also left-hand side USB not working

AC input plug is loose.

Fixable?

Apple tech said not worth repairing. Have lost Hardware test disk.

Hi Chris,

First do a pram reset and a PMU reset. Repair your permissions. If usual troubleshooting actions don't restore the sound functionality then remove the computer top case and check on the PB left side and you'll see the sound board. Try to reseat the 3 board connectors in the sockets. If that doesn't solve the problem then you'll have to replace the sound board. I checked on iFixit for the board you'd need but it's not listed in the PB 17" 1.5Ghz parts list. Contact iFixit to know if the board is available. If not I have a sound board for your PB that I don't need.

Email me at:

lemerise.m at gmail.com

and i'll send you a pict. It comes with the ribbon cable that connects to the logic board.

Thanks for the reply. I had done PRAM, PMU reset, repair permissions etc. Have already ordered a sound board + AC power board from iFixit. AC plug showed red sometimes and USB stopped working. Chris

Chris Yates,

OK fine. Keep us informed if repairs worked or not.
