new battery does not charge

I ordered a new battery at ifixit for my iPhone 3G. Installation went smoothly, following the manual.
Phone started up ok with the new battery charged to about 60%.
Unfortunately the battery never charged. Wehen connecting to charger, I got the charging symbol but charging stayed remained unchanged.
Going back to old battery solved the charging issue, so I guess the "new" battery was dead to begin with.
Any ideas?
Return it, the battery, to the vendor for either a refund or a new battery
