Why does my iMac quit shortly after start up?

Two things may happen when I try to use my iMac.
1. start up will be normal all the way through log in and i can open an application, but then suddenly it quits (goes black).
2. I will hear the start up bong and the start up light stays on and then I hear a humming sound. The light stays on and the humming continues until I unplug the computer.
Answer: I had the Mac store evaluate it and it turned out the power supply had to be replaced. It works fine now.
