My iPod won't restore, why?

My ipod lately has been telling me that i need to connect it to iTunes and restore it, upon doing so, my itunes, after supposedly restoring it, says that i have an ipod that is in recovery mode, and that i must restore it before it can be used with itunes. I try to resotre it again, and the process continues. Can anyone help me out?
What iPod model is it, how long has this been going on, and what have you tried to fix it?
