This is the message, 4MOT/4/40000003

Thank you ABCellars. I was on youtube and was trying to select the link to post a video. My computer started acting odd, the page was frozen sort of..i could move my mouse around but it had an odd symbol beside the cursor. I rebooted, and it was still there. The cursor moves but it unusable. I googled and found how to start in safe mode where I can use the cursor, but odd symbol is still present. I ran the test in both modes and I think it was basically the same message both times. I do not know what a SMC is. I would be happy to try that if I knew what it was! :)
nancy,
Well then, without knowing it, I did that :) I have unplugged it and rebooted it. No help. Always have to try though!
nancy,
serial ends in J5PE I am the original owner. Purchased I believe in fall of 09 OS X 10.6.8 Thank you :)
nancy,
Thank you, I will try that!
nancy,
I reseated the RAM, rebooted and same. I forgot to mention that the screen is all messed up if I am not in safe mode or diagnostic. There are odd square symbols all over the bottom portion of the screen as well as the odd symbol attached to the cursor. The rest of the screen is greyish white. I ran the quick test again and message ends in HDD 1255. I am doing the longer test again.
nancy,
I ran the longer test and it ends in HDD 1251. Not sure if that is significant
nancy,
If the picture in safe mode has no "artifacts" on it there is a good chance this is not hardware related. Try running disk utilities and repairing permissions. If that doesn't work try creating another account to see what the screen shows with it. It sounds like the user account may be corrupted, clear up until you mention the artifact by the cursor in safe mode. Other than that it sounds like a VRAM (video RAM) problem. I know the AHT error doesn't come back to that. So, it could be foreign matter (dust debris) causing it and a good cleaning could resolve the problem. Also what was the first part of the error codes, please? All the letters matter.
ABCellars,
In safe mode the only odd thing on the screen is the strange thing that is attached to the cursor. It looks like a square inch of scribbles. When I removed the door to access the RAM it was very dusty. So that idea has merit. :-/ I ran the disk utility and did the repair disk permissions. The results were MOT/4/40000003: HDD -1251
I rebooted after running the disk utility and the screen was the same as before except the bottom that had been random marks is now a pretty blue.
nancy,
Am I correct in thinking that if it needs a good cleaning I need to order tools to open it up? If it were the fan, wouldn't the computer over heat in safe mode and be a problem? I need to add that along with the pretty blue on the bottom1/10 ofthe screen there are also grey marks going across the center of the screen. The same pattern of random marks repeated 8 times.
nancy,
Please share some pictures of what your screen is doing. They might help. Thank you
