Upper LCD screen went black/dark

So, I have been playing my fiance's 3ds for a week now. He takes super good care of it and I did the same. This morning I was playing it and it was fine. This afternoon it was not. The Upper LCD screen was very dark and some of the images seemed to be a negative of what they should be. I upped the brightness and nothing. This device has been i think once dropped a few months ago from less than a foot on to carpet. I read two other stories here about the LCD needing to be changed or the cable hooking to the upper screen being compromised. I just want to know the easiest way to solve this for my fiance because I feel responsible being the last one that used it.
Found out from my fiance that this is not the first time it has done this. He found an easy fix for now. You just clamp your thumb and pointer finger on the top two corners until the screen goes back to normal and this seems to fix it for a while. Not sure exactly why it goes black but doing this seems to fix whatever it is.
