Why my device shuts off after a few seconds

My I touch shuts off and shows a black screen after a few seconds of use. When I push the start button, the apple symbol appears and that is all. When I put it back on the charger, the apple symbol again appears then the battery symbol. The battery is fully charged according to the symbol.
On the advice of others I have done a "reset" and a "restore". It is better, but still shuts off for no reason, at times.
