stuck in reboot/recovery mode help please

I have been sure to do a fair bit of research, but I am getting desperate.
My iphone 3g is stuck in recovery mode. I have tried getting it into dfu mode and restoring the phone by itunes, however each time i get an error 1604 or sometimes 1605. I follow itunes advice about sorting it, but this does nothing.
I have also tried tiny umbrella and also reviewing help or tutorials online. Nothing is helping.
One day my phone was working fine, I had to turn it off for a few hours, and bam! I can no longer get it back on.
It is fully charged.
Any tips I would appreciate - other than telling me to update my phone :p
