iPhone needs to cool down after battery replacement & wouldn't charge?

I forgot to charge my iPhone once and then it drained so it turned off automatically. So after that i plugged it in and tried to charge it. It then wouldn't charge when on, only charge when off. So i replaced the battery. After it, when i turned on my iPhone, it said iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it. I couldn't charge it or anything. so i just let it stand for a couple hours but nothing changed. What should I do now?
