New battery always at 50% charge

I recieved an iPhone 3GS from work that had a bad battery. I unlocked it with ATT, and then replaced the battery using your guide (thank you very much).
Once back together I has some issues getting the digitizer to work, but was finally sucessful. It appears that the phone is completely operational.
However When I first powered the phone up with the new battery, the battery showed about 50% charge. I left the phone to charge over night, and in the morning it still showed 50% charge.
Do you have any suggestions as how to diagnose where the problem lies?
Donald Schlicht, have you tried a different cable, a different USB port on your computer or a AC adapter yet? Have you tried to clean your dock connector with some isopropyl alcohol and some compressed air? Have you checked the dock connector for bend, broken corroded pins? Does the phone get recognized by your computer and does it sync okay with iTunes?
oldturkey03,
Ok I think I found out what the problem is. The orginal batter is part number 616-0432. The replacement battery is part number 616-0346 which is for an iPhone 3G, not GS. Replaced the old battery and the indicator is working correctly. So I purchased what I hope is the correct battery (went by part number).
