Camera thinks the card cover is still open. How to fix that?

Even though the card cover is closed, the camera will only show the message "Please close card cover" on the screen when turned on. The camera is unusable since it won't let me take pictures because of this.
My first guess was that the little plastic "hook" touching the sensor was broken, but this is not the case. So my second guess is the sensor itself is broken.
Any hints on how to fix that?
