Do I need to power off?

I just changed out the glass on my daughter's 2nd gen. iPod touch. During re-assemble, the power came back on. The screen is snapped into place on three sides, however the side with the digitizer ribbon did not snap down correctly resulting in a screen with no touch capability. I need to take the screen back off but do not know if it is safe to do so with the power on. Do I need to wait for the battery to eventually go dead before soldiering on? Thanks for any assistance.
