Why has my iPhone4 screen just gone black

i was using my iphone4 and all of a sudden the screen went black but the backlight was still on. I put it into restore mode by holding the power button and the home button and plugged it into itunes but it didnt properly restore. A screen popped up and said error1604. Now the back light wont work what so ever.
I took it to a repair shop but he said there was nothing he could do as it is still stuck in the restore mode...........
