Compaq C700 will not turn on is it dead?

Hello. . . the morning after working fine (I had powered it completely off, I tried to turn on my Compaq Presario C700 laptop . . . and nothing ! I called two IT people. . .the cable has been checked, it is fine. I pulled the battery, tried to start it just with the cable. .. and still nothing. No light on the on button, no light around where the power cable plugs in.
Any ideas ? My son needs a laptop for school, and I would be willing to try a self repair (after hearing your interview on CBC radio this afternoon) . . .

Carrie Mae, which cable? Did you check the output of the power supply? Check the DC in plug first, see what you get. Right now you have to see if you get power to the motherboard. Check your power supply and your DC in port with a multimeter. Let us know.
