Engine won't start after overhaul

I have done a practically a complete overhaul on this engine: Spark plugs & Wires, Dist cap and rotor, heads, head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, starter, battery, alternator, fuel pump is about a year old, new fuel filter, but the engine wont turn over.
Any suggestions appreciated.
What have you checked so far? Do you have power to the starter, does your starter turn over when it is removed from the engine? Can you turn the engine by hand (with a wrench on the crankshaft bolt). Why did you replace all those parts? What was wrong with the engine before?
