My girlfriend is also running Leopard and tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion. You're going to have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first; you can't do a Leopard-to-Mountain Lion upgrade.

but where can i get snow leopard thats the problem i've tried to update it to 10.6.1 but wouldn't accept it and said i need 10.6 first.

Call 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) and tell them you want the Snow Leopard upgrade which they can send in disk form to your address, I just bought it from them shipped for $21.00 (beats $75 on ebay). Hope that helps!
