Front camera retaining clip--Cotton?

I just replaced the front camera in my CDMA iPhone 4. The retaining clip removal was done and it popped about a foot away. Put in new camera and was doing the clip reinstall and it seemed camera was very loose. Then I noted a small piece of cotton like material that was not on my work bench earlier. I ended up putting this as padding between the camera and retaining clip but wanted to ask if this was correct. It seemed to secure the camera much better than just the retaining clip alone.
