Why is my iPhone3g still on but has a black screen?

i was in the middle of texting when my iphone went blank into a black screen, i can still recieve texts and incoming calls but the screen is just staying black, on most cases people say to restore it but when i first purchased it i restored it then and i went right back to the beginning where it wasn't in english. so im not sure to restore it or shoul i?
