MacBook Pro: Screen Problems, not sure where to look after LCD replacement?

My 15" non-unibody MacBook Pro was acting up for a little while. Flickering screen, then after a day it went black altogether. BUT when i change the brightness the screen gets dimmer/brighter but just no image. I connected it to an external screen, no problems, all working there. Took it to the Apple store and when they turned it on it worked flawless for a couple of minutes but then died again. And they seemed to think that the LCD could be bad but I was out of warranty. So i decided to take it upon myself. Bought an LCD from a legitimate online retailer, fitted it this afternoon and still no joy. Can anybody shed any light on this? Could it be one of the wires to the screen?

Thanks

iPhone 3GS: Touch screen still not working perfectly after replacement

I cracked my touch screen a few weeks ago and ordered a new one here on iFixit. when I opened the phone up I noticed that the LCD was also cracked, so I also ordered one of those. After meticulously installing all of the parts according to the instructions I am happy to report that the phone looks great. However, the touch functions are off by about 15 pixels. When I click on one app, the app just to the left is what the touch screen actually registers. I've tried fiddling with the #2 connection, but I can't seem to get the touch accuracy to be just right. I've read that some others are having similar problems. do you think there is something wrong with the replacement part? or is it possibly a motherboard issue? at this point, I am already $150 into the fix, so I'm not really in a place to invest much more into this project. Please let me know if anyone has found a way to solve this issue.

thanks

iPhone 3G: How is replacement of the home button done?

Hi there,

I've found quite a lot of instructions to disassemble the iPhone 3G and q&a that involve the home button ... but nothing that really describes what is to be done to only do a replacement of the home button.

When I had the phone open to work on other things I saw the home button covered by some adhesive strips. Is it just that trivial - removing the strips, pull the button out and replace it, join together all things vice-versa?

iPod Touch 1st Generation: A replacement for the gold antenna?

I had two broken iPod touches that I turned into one fully functioning ipod. The leftover broken one still boots and doesn't have a back light, but I don't want to spend the money to repair it. Instead I want to jailbreak it and turn it into a media or storage server.

The problem is, I broke the little gold antenna in half, and I lost one of the halves. It still detects wifi networks, but will not connect, and I've tried multiple networks.

Is there a replacement that can be found somewhere, or something else that can be used in it's place, such as foil? I've tried a gum wrapper already, but that did not work. The cheaper the solution, the better. Thanks!

*EDIT*

I tried a piece of a foil gum wrapper. My wifi works now. I'm not sure if the wrapper did it, but I know that I don't want to touch it, now that it works.

iPhone 1st Generation: Installed new battery, wont charge, restarts repeatedly.

My 1st gen iPhone had a bad battery after a devastating earthquake in my town I was forced to use a car charger to charge it - ruining the battery (lesson there!!)

So I bought a replacement battery from dealextreme.com and installed it. I have done quite alot of these types of repairs before so was not worried. All the same I managed to break off the solder terminal for the white wire. I scratched the board back to the copper trace underneath and finished the battery installation ok (considering the mistake I had made).

The phone turned on fine, had 95% charge which dropped to 88% and seemed stable.

I put the phone on a AC Apple wall charger and left it for an hour to find the battery being depleted, even though the battery icon showed "Charging".

Overnight I left it on charge but the battery kept depleting and eventually the phone started cycling reboots over and over.

I've done a Home-Power hold reset - no help.

I've removed the SIM and has stopped the reboot cycle, but still will not charge.

The replacement battery had exactly the same part number on it as the old battery (an original Apple - P/N 616-0291) which I concede doesn't mean anything really since whoever made the replacement can print whatever they like on it.

Question - Why is the phone not charging the new battery, why is it repeatedly rebooting and how do I fix it? What exactly is the white wire for in the battery and is that the cause of this issue?

Thanks for your help

MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260: Would replacing malfunctioning keyboard solve my problem?

I woke up today to discover a line of keys down my keyboard were not responding. I've not spilled anything on my computer, nor have a dropped it or knowingly damaged it in any way. I have no idea what could have caused this.

At first, it was just the F6 key down to the N key that were not responding. Shortly thereafter, for seemingly no reason at all, more keys began malfunctioning. The entire row starting at A until L will trigger the key above or below at the same time (pressing A would result it AZ being pressed when observed in Keyboard Viewer).

I'm planning on selling this computer soon, and don't want to dump money into it unless necessary, though I also don't want to sell someone a shoddy laptop.

iPhone 3GS: Battery won't charge after change

Hi!

I've purchased a new battery from ifixit to replace my old one. After assembly of my iphone the battery doesn't charge. I've now waited for an hour and still got the battery-sign on the display with only a thin red line on the left of the battery. Device doesn't boot.

What's going on here? I replaced the battery properly. Any tips?

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Changing the outer case, can I put back a DVD burner?

For HTPC usage, the lack of a DVD drive in the Mac Mini Mid 2011 is a pain. Especially since you cannot presently find external enclosures with the exact same footprint.

But if I changed the outer case with the Mac Mini 2009/2010 one, could I put back a DVD drive (or Blu-ray) inside ?

What would I need in addition to this outer case : cable ? support brackets ?

EDIT : just after posting (Thanks, Murphy !) I saw this post about the exact same subject.

However, this previous post does not answer 2 important questions :

- since it is possible to connect a second HDD in the Mac ("Mac Mini Dual Hard Drive Kit"), why cannot a SATA optical drive be connected to the mid-2011 motherboard, with the proper cable ?

- how bad is the "angling required to get in the optical drive bracket" ? Is it yet feasible ? Does it damage anything ?

iPod Touch 4th Generation: After screen repair, power button is unresponsive.

I'll make this short and sweet, yet descriptive. I ordered a lcd/screen replacement b/c my iPod screen was cracked. everything was going great. I replaced it and was almost ready to close up shop but I decided to test it before i put the adhesives down. I clicked the power button and I ended up getting a white screen so I went in and redid everything and then that time I got a white screen. Unfortunately, in between that time, i screwed something up with the power button. When I finished everything for the first time, the power button worked. But when I went back in, i screwed something up and now the power button doesnt work. The screen is fine and working like a charm but the power button doesnt work. Btw, I did read that the power button is on the same ribbon as the volume rockers are on and surprisingly the volume rockers work so does that just mean i wiggled something loose or what? Please help me. Thanks

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010: Where to buy replacement logic board or is cross-grading possible?

I cooked my i7 2.8Ghz logic board. Spillage. Stupidity. Late night gaming. The local indie Mac shop estimated near $2000 for the repair. Too much for my pockets for a year and 1/2 old machine I paid a third more for. I want to repair it myself but I can't seem to locate the specific model/processor logic board replacement, on iFixit or elsewhere. Any suggestions of where to look? Or is it possible to cross-grade into an i5 board, given physical tolerances of the uni-body and internal peripheral compatibilities? Any suggestions or help would greatly appreciated.

My dock connector on my AT&T iPhone 4 stopped working and so I ordered a replacement and replaced it using the instructions on iFixIt. (Great instructions!)

It now is charging when I plug it into a power outlet (which it wasn't doing before I replaced the connector). I charged it overnight, and now am at work and tried to connect it to my computer to Sync, but it doesn't appear as though the phone or the computer recognize the connection. The phone doesn't show the "charging" battery and doesn't show up in iTunes.

I have tried using other cables, different USB ports, and different computers, so I am 99.9% sure it is an issue in the phone itself.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Did I miss a connection somewhere? If it didn't charge at all, that would make sense to me. But, it charges from an outlet, just not via computer, and it doesn't connect to the computer either.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012: Are 2010/11 LCDs and Top Cases Suitable for 2012 Replacement?

I have had the misfortune of dropping a 2lb. external hard drive onto my 1-week old MacBook Pro 15" Unibody with Hi-Res anti-glare display. It caused a 1cm wide dent in the top keyboard case to the left of the trackpad and a piece from the external hard drive enclosure broke off and ricocheted onto the LCD, causing a 4-5mm scratch in the LCD screen. Please note: this is not a Glossy display, there is no glass!

Obviously it's too early for any 2012 replacement parts to be available without buying directly from Apple (which I already found out would be about a $1200 fix for parts and labor). This machine's model number is A1286, the same as the 2010 and 2011 models.

I'm wondering if any of these parts be a suitable replacement from either 2010 or 2011 versions:

LCD Screen (only, no display assembly)

Complete display assembly

Top Case/Keyboard

I've heard that due to differences in the logic board layouts from year to year, the required length for the video cable can vary, which would be a non-starter. I'm hoping someone here at iFixit who has done the 2012 tear down might know!

Many thanks!

After using the computer for a couple hours I noticed the fan rpm never dipped below 6000 rpm. No processes were hogging the cpu (verified in Activity Monitor) and iStat displays temperature readings from all the sensors so I doubt I have an issue where the sensor became disconnected (current CPU temp is 113 F and fan speed is at 6000 rpm). I've also reset both SMC and PRAM to no avail.

Are there any steps I can take to make the new replacement fan behave normally?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009: Where I can find a replacement for battery pentalobe screws?

Hi there.

I need three new OEM pentalobe screws for the battery in my MacBook Pro. Unfortunately I stripped the previous one opening the Mac Book Pro, but I'd like to replace them with original ones (or very similar) since my Apple Care is still valid. Can you suggest me where I can find them? I surfed around the web and I didn't found them anywhere.

Thank you very much.

PowerBook G4 Aluminum 17": Is there more than 1 Type of Logic Board I can Use?

Hello, I have a 17" PowerBook G4 that I'm just trying to fix.

I ordered a A1013 17" 820-1502-A LogicBoard for it that worked perfectly fine, but one of the Chips on it didn't work with the AirPort Card. Which is probably why it was only $85.

So my question is, is there more than 1 Type of Logic Board? Cause I know for a fact, that the original Logic Board wasn't a 820-1502, but I don't know what type it was.

So maybe someone could tell me a different type of Logic Board to install?

Thanks

Update

Well that really didn't help. Let me give some more info.

This is the PowerBook I have:

On my PowerBook G4, my battery says A1039, but my Logic Board does say 820-1502-A.

Serial No: V73154JLMVZ

Bluetooth ID: 000A952F9318

Ethernet ID: 00039D548EA

AirPort Extreme ID: 000393EB5081
