Apple Wireless Keyboard: Why is Bluetooth "not found" when keyboard light activates?

Keyboard working fine for over a year. Battery terminal clean, new batteries checked, good power, inserted properly with visible check after removing small plastic cover over strip connector. Keyboard powers up ok with additional evidence of caps lock LED functioning properly. The computer does not find a Bluetooth keyboard connected. Nothing has been spilled, the keys all work fine, the Bluetooth just does not work. Should the electronics be replaced? I can remove by removing one screw and disengaging the strip connector.
