iPhone wont turn on

I put my phone on to charge as normal last night, the next morning i woke and the screen said ''device not supported by this iphone'' or something along those lines? i looked it up on net and many said cleaning the dock connector, so with a toothpick and toothbrush i cleaned it and pulled out alot of fluff-

now though the phone wont charge at all and all im getting is a screen showing a battery with a plug /power underneath

is this the dock connector that needs replacing?
