Please check your settings. the last time you connected and setup an external monitor you could have set it to "external only". this would darken your laptop monitor and only show screen on external view. i had an older hp dv2700 which did this to me.

even when i unplugged the external monitor it still remembered the setting and would not auto-switch back to the laptop's LCD display.
