haveAnother thing to check - does she have a bluetooth device paired with the MacBook? Have seen this behavior with certain brands of bluetooth mice which send a burst of radio traffic when the mouse goes into sleep mode. This of course, then kicks the notebook into clamshell mode.

try turning off bluetooth on the MacBook, and testing if this resolves the issue.
