How to fix audio crackle

whenever i attach headphones or use the built in speaker, all i get is a quiet, crackly sound that is like the music, but terribly staticy. it works fine with my ipod dock, however. i just re-synced it, and that didnt help. it worked earlier today. what are the possible causes and replacements? i have spent about $100 on components for a speaker system im building, but really need the ipod to play music or its all worthless.
