no, you should not remove battery when plugged into AC
although it's safe to do so, the MB or MBP will automatically reduce the processor speed when running on AC without a battery - see [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332?viewlocale=en_US|this technical note] from Apple. As the note says, this is in case the computer needs more power than can be provided by the AC adapter alone - as could possibly be the case if you're running a lot of video and the CPU gets heavily loaded.
