Shooting mode dial not working properly

When you move the shooting mode dial some operations won't work and others work but not with the operation indicated. For example, "auto" mode doesn't allow you to shoot but instead, you can view your shots. "Manual mode" indicates "portrait." "SCN" mode indicates "auto" setting. "Movie" mode has become "manual" setting. Not able to shoot movies on any setting.

The camera was not dropped or injured in any way. This happened while I was shooting in "auto" mode and the lens all of a sudden retracted into the camera.
