Fighting the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

Text:

Our Civic has two indicators that are part of the TPMS: a green(?) light with a flat-tire icon (meaning seems obvious), and an amber light with the letters "TPMS" that are supposed to indicate a more fundamental problem.

The amber TPMS light on our Civic has been on non-stop, but I haven't been satisfied with the answer from the dealer's service center: that the tires just needed more air. No, I topped them all off, but the light remains on. Besides, wouldn't the flat-tire light be the one to light up if tire pressure was the issue?

Anyway, my chief questions:

# How can I reset and retrain the TPMS myself?
# How can I pinpoint problems in the TPMS that would trigger the amber warning light?
# What TPMS problems can I fix myself?
