Compare Thunderbolt to Mini DisplayPort

Thunderbolt replaced the Mini DisplayPort (MDP) on Apple laptops, but both have same number of pins. My question is what MDP features were sacrificed to support Thunderbolt connectivity? Were there just some PINs that were not used on MDP and Thunderbolt took advantage of this?

I've looked at various sites on-line and couldn't find an answer. Does iFixIt.com have a tear down of both connectors side-by-side?
