What order should I jailbreak/update my phone?

I have a iPhone 3gs (currently running 5.1.1) that is not yet unlocked, jailbroken, or updated to ios 6. I want to know if I jailbreak it first, will it still let me update? Or if I update it first, will it mess it up when I try to jailbreak it? Also, as of the beginning of this week, I no longer have service. Will doing one of these things help?
