Computer will not recognize iPod, and the screen only shows logo?

I ran out of character space: My computer (PC Win. 7) will not recognize the iPod (3rd gen) when it is connected. And when the Ipod is on, it only displays the apple logo. My friend bought the iphone 4 and gave me his ipod touch, since we have different tastes in music I was deleting the content of his ipod, when I got back was a black screen with the apple logo. Please Help!
What I already tried:
- turning it off, holding the power and home button
-the ipod will charge when connected to the cable and my computer since the "dead battery" symbol appeared after i connected it. after it charged for a while it went back to the apple logo
