Trackpad stops working starts again after reboot

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1260 running Mountain Lion.
My trackpad began failing several times a day and began working again after reboot. At first, when this happened, the keyboard continued to work. Now it has gotten worse, with the trackpad failing more often and the keyboard failing as well.
Any advice on what is going on or how to fix the problem?
I believe I have seen this problem identified here in the past.
Is there any way to fix this besides replacing the entire top case?
If not, is there any way to buy a new top case? All I have seen available are used top cases.
