Why does my iPhone 4 not charge?

I changed the iphone 4 battery connector however one of the 2 pins on the back broke. Do those pins affect anything?
When I plug it on the charger it makes the charging sound but has the spanner tool sign on the battery instead of the lightning sign.
Does anybody know what the problem could be?
