iPod Touch 1st Generation: How do I restart my jailbroken bricked iPod?

After trying to clear my jailbroken ipod touch for an upgrade and clean install of the new firmware, it is now stuk on the apple logo screen, with some broken pixels above the logo and the loading progress wheel (but not moving).

I have tried the home and power buttons - it boots into the normal apple logo for about 5 seconds then loads the broken one.

Any suggestions please? The ipod is not recognized when plugged into the computer by itunes.
