iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: Why is my display flickering after this repair?

--2/14/2013--

After completing this DIY, I am seeing occasional (2-3 times per minute) flickering / dimming of the iMac display. It happens for ~1 second and only dims the image; the screen does not turn off completely nor is there any distortion of the image. I can post a video if that is helpful.

I was pretty careful to ensure the display cable was properly secured, and the screws holding the display in are uniformly snug. (I saw some reports for earlier iMac generations that suggested display issues could result from improperly secured screws.)

I should mention that I undertook this upgrade shortly after buying the iMac used, so it is possible that the issue was already there and I didn't notice it before beginning surgery. But I had used it for a few hours and never saw it, so I'm skeptical that the problem existed before the upgrade.

Any ideas?

--2/16/2013--

Tried removing the display again, re-seated all display connectors, reinstalled display. The issue persists.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: iMac i5, 3 on 3 beeps, black screen

First of all, sorry for my bad English.

I bought my iMac in July 2011, Intel i5, 21.5 ", 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB HD, HD 6750M and since November 2012 he stopped working. When trying to turn it back on 3 beeps sounded and did not turn on more.

After a few days, I turned it on normally, it was OK. On another day, the problem came back: while I was using it stopped working and did not turned on, just sounds of 3 on 3 beeps.

The screen does not turn on, goes black and no other sound is emitted beyond the beeps.

I've done testing of the RAMs, but nor replacing them it works.

Has anyone had this problem and managed to solve?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: Problems after installing SSD as second drive.

I've installed a Samsung 840 SSD to the second SATA-Port of my iMac along this tutorial: Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428 Dual Hard Drive Kit. HDD is still on first SATA-Port, OpticalDrive is still on thirst SATA-Port. Then i've installed Mountain Lion on SSD and made it bootable. SSD and HDD work fine. But, after this modification i have problems with all USB-Devices, Firewire-Devices and the OpticalDrive. DataStreams break up constantly, so transfering data to external devices is very slow and jerky, also reading from DVD. Burning a DVD is really impossible because break of DataStream. Getting following error: Unable to burn. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry. Sometimes I also loose connection to USB-Devices. Everything worked fine with Lion and without SSD.

My first idea was, that the SSD slows down the USB-Controller but i have no idea why the OpticalDrive and Firewire are affected too. Maybe then the problem is the Bus between controllers and CPU/Ram? Does anybody know something about this problem?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: Upgrade to Ivy Bridge CPU?

Is it possible (or worthwhile) for one to upgrade the Sandy Bridge CPU currently in the EMC-2428 iMac to Intel's newly released Ivy Bridge unit?

Whilst no doubt the physical dimensions of both processors would be the same, I worry that the unique architecture of Intel's so-called '3D-Transistor' may preclude the processor from being installed into pre-2012 machines. Is my concern founded? And should I even bother with the expenditure and the surgery on my iMac?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: SSD + RAM install - only beeps

Hello-

I have a brand new 2.8GHz 21.5" iMac that I turned on once and did a software update with. I turned it off, followed the guide on here and installed a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD. I believe I did each step completely with no surprises. The final step before turning the machine on was to swap out the OEM 8GB RAM with (also brand new) 2x 8GB Crucial DDR3L 1333.

When I push the power button I hear the HDD spin inside for ~1/2s. About 3 seconds in I hear a single beep that just repeats every ~5 seconds. If I let this continue for 5 or so beeps, the fan turns on full throttle and stay that way. Unplugging the computer and trying this again a few minutes now have the machine turning on with the fans already on full speed.

This leads me to believe it's the RAM - I tried both slots (one on top left, one on top right... one on bottom left, one on bottom right). No luck.

I tried the original 8GB of RAM. Also no luck. Again, tried both top and bottom.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... perhaps I missed a connector?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: A way to use a non apple drive in one of these?

As we all know, I have a aging MacBook Pro from 2009, which I will admit is a solid computer in the end, but almost 4 years old in the end, well not just yet, it's going to happen quick

I was looking into a new iMac 21.5(27 is too big, I have a 20'' monitor for my Linux PC too) and I knew about this HDD sensor bull where i will make my fans run at full speed with no help

Apple, !^!* off with this, i'm a freelance technican, this really @@^%!^ me off because if I want to upgrade a client's drive, I need to be CERTIFIED by apple to get a drive for a client(or they won't sell it to me, just tell me screw off), and they have to pay crazy fees, screw that!

I REFUSE to upgrade these 2011 iMac's because of this, only the memory

Enough ranting

before I buy one, is there a workaround just yet so when Iget mine, i can replace my drive and actually work on the HDD's and not just memory, for my own and other iMacs

just to clarify how i handle iMacs, I will do HDD's on anything before the mid 2009 because of the issue and various ways to stop upgrades on the mid 2009, so it's mixed which ones have the HDD swapped, but all of them have memory done

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: Why does Mac OS X fail to install?

21.5 inch Mid 2011 iMac

In an effort to make the computer brand new, I decided to reinstall Lion. After a quick Google, I erased the hard drive using Disk Utility & restarted in Recovery Mode. I clicked the "Reinstall Mac OS X" option and agreed to the terms, and chose destination to install. It then downloaded a fresh copy of Lion and rebooted to the Mac OS X Installer. Less than a minute into the installation an error pops up:

"Mac OS X could not be installed on you computer.

Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created. Visit http://www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more.

Click Restart to restart you computer and try installing again."

I've retried at least a dozen times with the same results. I know there is a solution out there, but it has evaded me for the past two weeks. Any advice would be appreciated more than you can imagine.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: Crucial M4 added to mid-2011 21.5" iMac, SLOW!

I just completed the install of a 256GB Crucial M4 into my mid-2011 21.5" iMac last night and the drive is very slow.

The boot takes ages, the system is almost unresponsive when it does get to the login screen, and it is wholly unusable. I opened the iMac back up and made sure the SATA cable was plugged in securely at both ends and checked for crimps in the cable as well. I re-cloned my hard drive just to be sure that wasn't the problem and a 100GB clone took over 5 hours. When I cloned it the first time using a USB-SATA cable, it took less than one hour (and booting off the drive using that same adapter cable led to speeds that were still faster than my HDD, leading me to think that the drive is not bad).

Any suggestions?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428: GPU interchangeability - will 6970 work in 21.5?

From the teardowns of 21.5" model on ifixit and 27" model on other sites, GPU modules look very similar. Would it be possible to fit a 6970 into 21.5" model, and if it would fit, would it work and would 21.5" supply enough power?
