iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: replace the hard drive, how do I connect Hard Drive thermal sensor?

My iMac's (i3 ,WD 500G ) Hard Drive is failure and I replace a new one but I can't connect thermal sensor to new Hard Drive because the connectors are different.

So my Hard Drive Fan will run the full speed after 10 mins when I power on.

I google the solution and someone suggest that I can jump the connector to make the sensor short then it will show 0 C degree.

It works but I afraid the Hard Drive will overheat when I use for a long time.

Do you have any solution to solve this problem?

Thank you.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Upgrading CPU from i3 3.06 Ghz to i5/i7-S version 82W

Hi,

I want to give my iMac i3 an upgrade to i5 or i7 processor.

I've red some posts of some people who tried several combinations.

Some combinations worked, some didn't.

The CPU's that didn't work were the CPU's with a TDP of 95W.

The i5 CPU's that have been tried out and worked were the CPU's with a TDP of 73W. My big question is; There are several CPU's with a TDP of 82W like the i5 750S/i7 860S/i7 870S.

Will those CPU's work? I can't find any information on the web with these specific CPU's....

The TDP is ±9W higher then the standard i3..

Thanks.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Video Output external but not Internal

Hi here is the scenario - I have two of these macs here with exactly the same problem. We can get display to an external monitor but not to the internal LCD. The machine works perfectly on an external monitor - just nothing on the internal.

We have changed everything except Logic Board - VGA, PSU, Cables, RAM, Inverter. PRAM & SMC Reset.

Mobo LED'S show all except 4 which from what I read is normal - this should only light if there is a temp problem.

I've trawled and trawled and cannot find anything - The fact that I now have two here in the space of 2 months makes me think there is an answer to be found. The first mac was built May 2011 and the second Mac January 2012 so a big gap in manufacturing.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Booting / Graphic Problem

Hi everyone,

I have this iMac. It doesn't boot properly: Sometimes it works for a while but then it crashes. After a crash (complete freeze) it doens't boot properly: I have a blank screen with the pointer only and arount the pointer there's some graphical "noise".

After the initial problem I tried and got the system to boot in SAFE MODE. I copied all the files I needed and formatted the drive, reinstalled OSX 10.8.3. Worked fine for a while, same problem now (Just to know: I didn't copy the personal files to make sure the problem wasn't related).

Since the crashes happen after some use and the iMac seems to be very "used" I'm going to disassembly it and clean the interior (suppose is a overheating problem).

Just wanted to know if it is a common problem and if it's related to special components I have to swap (could be GPU?)

Thanks,

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: DisplayPort cable damaged? Display not being recognized with new one

I think I damaged mine. I opened it to replace the optical drive, and when I was going to close the system. I didn't inserted the ribbon in a parallel way, resulting in a dented ribbon, I just received the DisplayPort ribbon/cable and to my surprise my display is not being recognized. I'm using an external display now.

I did a SMC PRAM reset, I took the RAM away and reinserted again but nothing happens.

is there anyway to replace it by myself? I'm not in the USA.

Thanks Oldturkey03, pollytintop and Dan: The EMC is 2389. The display doesn't work at all, no backlight no picture, it is not even being detected. Right now I'm working with a Plasma TV.

I had the same problem with the original data ribbon which has the SN: 593-1280 REV A and then part I ordered from Macpartsonline is 593 - 1280A ICT 1611 which appears to be the same except for the way how the code is shown. There is no visible damage on the socket itself.

The ribbon plugs in both sides naturally, its a perfect fit, so unless the new ribbon is also damaged I blame the display port socket, since the display was fine before I dented the old ribbon, maybe I stretched the socket or broke some pin.

I checked the diagnose LED's and it just the first three lit.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: How and where can I buy HDD?

Hello, I'm facing a long trouble with my iMac (Mid 2010), the Internal Hard Drive is broke (S.M.A.R.T problem), and I don't know how, how much and where I can buy a new Hard Disk.

I bought a wrong model (see model here: http://centralart3.dominiotemporario.com...), and I know the way to change, so I just want some help to teach me how and where to buy, because here in Brazil the HDD + the labor to repair (In Apple Care Network) is about $300,00 for 1TB HD.

So if I buy this (http://www.powerbookmedic.com/10TB-Hitac...), with this (http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Intel-iMac...) my iMac will run perfectly again?

Thanks and sorry for my english.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Boot from External Drive and New HDD

Hello everyone, I've basically 2 questions, so first I going to introduce you my trouble (My english fail sometimes : D)...

1- I've one MBP and one iMac Mid 2010 (like this http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588?viewlo...), and the second started to crash, something like S.M.A.R.T problem. So I search in interwebz about this and I saw that isn't a way to fix it. So the first question is Can I buy this HDD "Seagate 3.5" ST2000DL003 2000GB 5900 RPM SATA 6.0GB/s Desktop Hard Drive" to replace (in Apple Care). The size's right and this RPM is ok?

2- I installed a ML version in my external drive (connecting in my MBP) and It booted fine, for a moment I was a glad guy, so I restarted the OS in original MBP HDD and ejected the "External Mountain Lion" to plug in iMac and try to use. But when I try, It doesn't boot, just Apple loading screen, but I can access the 10.8.2 recuperation application (both, original from HD and the External too...), moreover I've a Bootcamp partition running win 7 perfectly. So I don't understand how can I start the recuperation application and win7 bootcamp, boot the External ML in my MBP, and I cannot boot the "External Mountain Lion" from external drive in iMac?

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Can I replace the CPU with a faster one?

I have a 2010 iMac 21.5 inch running a 3.6GHz dual core i5 processor (i5-680). I would like to know if it's possible to replace this i5 chip with the top-spec i7 chip from the latest 2012 iMac (the i7 3770s, 3.1GHz quad core).

I have checked the specs of these processors on the Intel site and the i7 has lower power consumption than the i5 currently in my iMac and uses the same socket, so I assume it will work in the old 2010 model (I read on another iFixit post that you cannot use a CPU with higher power consumption) but I would appreciate if anyone could tell me if there are any other potential problems I might run into.

Thanks in advance for any help!

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Can I put components from a 2012 iMac into a 2010 model?

Apologies since this covers something I asked in another question, but rather than ask separate questions about every component, I thought it would save time to simply ask: is there anything to prevent me putting the CPU and GPU from a 2012 iMac 21.5 inch into my 2010 model?

Basically, is there any fundamental difference in the logic boards that would prevent newer components from working?

I've read successful reports of people adding an i7 to an older i5 machine (as long as the power consumption is the same or lower on the new chip) so I wanted to know if the same could be done with the GPU. For example, I'd like to replace the Radeon 5670 with the newer 6770. The newer chip is GDDR5 whereas the older 5670 is GDDR3 - would this cause any incompatibility?

I would really appreciate any advice from someone who knows what they're talking about with regards to iMac logic boards - if it's just the components and not the boards themselves that are replaced in the newer models, I don't see why the newer components couldn't be swapped into older machines.

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: No picture, fans running, possible failure?

Hi there,

I have an iMac 11,2 (A1311) here, after turning on the iMac, there is no picture showing up, no typical Mac chime, Diag LEDs onboard showing LED 1&2 coming up, LED 3/4 is dark. I already changed the video card, same result. Connectors are fine, nothing broken. Unfortunately I think that the LogicBoard is defective, but as a replacement is very expensive, I hope that someone might have another recommendation/ tip?

Thanks,

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: two 2.5" drives INSTEAD of one 3.5" HD (apple fusion drive)

Hi Guys

Maybe I´m being stupid here so I thought you could help me out:

I want to get more mileage out of my iMac 21" 2010 and when I heard about fusion drive ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/6406/under... ) it hit me:

Pull the 500GB 3,5" HD and swap it for a 2*2.5"to 3.5" adapter tray (like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... ) and install a 1TB 2.5 HD plus a 128GB or 256GB SSD in its place.

Obviously I´d need a SATA Y-cable to connect two drives to the motherboard (or is there a spare SATA connector?)

Anybody tried this before?

Any practical theoretical roadblocks?

Would love to get your input.

cheers

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389: Colored vertical lines on monitor

Hi.

I already read a post about a similar problem, but my case is slightly different...

My monitor suddenly shows colored vertical stripes, going from top to bottom (only half of the top Menu Bar is correctly displayed). The stripes are not fixed, they vary in width and colour depending on what is displayed. An attached monitor set as primary works fine.

I have been told it could be either the display or the graphic card (or hopefully just something concerning the connection between the two).

I would like to open my iMac with the help of one of the great guides I found here, but I don't really know what I am looking for... can you help me? Is it really a problem I can fix myself?

I add a pic of my monitor, maybe it can help...
