iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Backlight refuses to work when screen open more than 45 degrees?

Hi all,

I recently bought an iBook G4, July 2005, 1.33GHz model. The machine works perfectly, except for the fact that the backlight refuses to be on if the screen is at a less than right angle with the body of the machine. In other words, to make the backlight work, I have to open the screen more than 45 degrees, and then it works brilliantly. I have discovered that if it doesn't work, all I have to do is put it to sleep then wake it up again, making sure to open it more than 45 degrees, and then it works. Pushing it less than 45 degrees immediately results in the backlight turning off, but I can still see the dim screen. I know that the backlight isn't broken since it works at certain angles. I have heard about issues with an inverter cable or something, but can't fathom specifically what my issue is. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: Loose 1.25cm pin inside iBook?

Upon opening an iBook G4 to replace its hard drive, I noticed a small metal pin(approx. 1-1.25cm in length and about the diameter of a straight pin or fine mechanical pencil lead). If fact, I thought it was a straight pin at first, only shorter and with cleanly cut blunt ends. Fortunately, it was caught on the adhesive of the tape holding down the wires of the DC in board. Does anyone know where this might have come from? Or if it's even a part of the iBook at all?

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Battery charges, startup chime... blank screen, no fan.

This iBook G4 has had three DC-in cards, so when my son said it wouldn't start I figured it was time for yet another one. But with a new charge cord, the battery charges fine; all four green lights.

However, when I start it up, I get nothing on the screen. I see a keyboard light come on and I hear the happy-Mac chime, but there is no whirring sound and the screen stays blank. No white screen of death or flashing disk with a question mark, which I would expect from a dead hard drive. I popped it open and checked connections, but I didn't find anything loose.

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Boots & hangs - replaced thermal grease - no joy

I have an a1055. It boots and hangs after a minute or so when cold. When warm, it will boot to a blue screen after the gear and hang.

I saw recommendations of replacing the thermal grease. I did that but it did not improve the problem. I really think this is a heat issue as I was able to pursued it to re-format and install the os by having it sit on a cold pack.

I have a couple of question:

1- when I got inside, I found that it used the heatsink material, like foam, instead of thermal paste. Would using thermal paste provide enough contact to dissipate the heat? Do I need to find more of the heatsink material instead?

2- any ideas what might still be wrong? I am not certain the fan is working. I think I hear it when it boots, but it seems to shut down after initial post . . . I think. It's hard to tell for certain when everything is coming on at power up.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Tiger - remove old admin

Hi. About 18 months ago I bought a used iBook G4 14" laptop with Tiger installed and on "Replacement DVD" media with the intention of giving to my granddaughter when she was old enough to use it. She's now 8-1/2, so I decided to make it a Christmas gift. I knew that the previous owner's profile was still on it - the user privileges were not password protected, and I figured I could reinstall Tiger from DVD and start clean just before I gave it to her (now). That apparently was naive. Reinstall requires sysadmin privileges, and the sysadmin profile from previous owner _is_ password protected. I can no longer contact that person. What are my options to do a clean install of Tiger from DVD on this computer? Is there some relatively simple work-around to remove that admin profile and/or reformat the drive? Or am I condemned to physically replacing the HDD with a new one to do this (I have a suitable drive, I just didn't want to do what looks like a byzantine replacement operation unless there was no other choice. Thanks in advance!

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Can I replace retention "washer" for battery screw?

I have an iBook G4 14" laptop I bought used to give my 8 yo granddaughter for Christmas. I replaced the battery and power adapter. In replacing the battery, the plastic "washer" that keeps the screw from falling out of the case fractured. This doesn't seem to affect the ability to lock the battery in place, since that appears to be accomplished by a metal latch with a hole in it at the bottom of the "screw hole" that slides horizontally (the battery screw has an off-center "peg" in the bottom that engages that hole and slides the latch). However, the battery screw itself can fall out fairly easily as it is now (and it's ugly). I'd like to replace the "washer". I wouldn't mind buying the battery screw as well, or even a screw set, if it came to that, but I have been unable to find the washer or screw alone, and also unable to determine the contents of the screw sets. I can think of a number of practical work-arounds that would allow safe use of the laptop without replacing that "washer", but I prefer to do the correct repair if possible. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I've changed a faulty logic board in a 14" iBook, with a "good" one, when it was halfly assembled (without shielding, and cases) I've tried it, it worked.

After I fully assembled it, I couldn't turn it on.

I've fully disassembled it and connected a power adaptor to dc-board, I've heard a noise like a short-circuit sparkling and I've also smelt it.

But if I unplug DC-board, and turn it on with a battery, it runs.

Update

I've found an smd cicruit moved from its position, and a circuit with colored (burned?) pin, my colleauge change them, but the situation remained the same. But when I touch the circuits around the dc-board connection at logic board I've found 4 circuits extremelly hot (my finger can't stand the heat), when the adapter was plugged in. I marked them the picture below:

iBook G4 14" 933 MHz-1.33 GHz: Will not boot, but only fan starts up. Dead DC board?

This iBook has been working fine for years, and began to behave strangely quite suddenly: the screen flashed and audio played. At restart worked at first, then it crashed. We were able to run in FireWire mode to back up some files. A subsequent attempt to startup from DVD failed (and the disk will not eject).

Now it will not boot at all: no chime, no screen display, no FireWire disk mounting. A fan starts when power button is pushed, and stops when pwr btn is held down for a few seconds. Otherwise, nothing. Tried keystrokes for PMU reset, no help.

The battery is good (4 lights) and AC adapter seems ok. Could this be a DC board problem, or is logic board failure more likely? What to test first?

I have az iBook G4 14" 1,33Ghz logic board, which can't recognise connected HDD. I've tried with two HDDs, and three different cables, but only flashing folder icon seen on LCD.

If I connected it trough firewire cable to another iBook running in targeted mode, it can be boot from the targeted hdd, it also can see an inserted install DVD from the targeted iBook, but when I want to install the OSX, the Hard Disk Utility only see the targeted HDD, and DVD.

I've formatted the test HDD in an iBook, so it couldn't be the problem.

My question is, which IC responsible for HDD control, and could it be replace. I have a few logic board with bad GPU for donor.

iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz: Just replaced the DC-In board, computer won't run off of batter?

What is going on with my computer! I just ordered a new DC-in board from the one and only www.ifixit.com and replaced it with your very skilled manuals. After the computer successfully started to charge, i let the computer sleep and charge over night and it got the battery clear up from zero to 79%! I used the computer next day, on my tour bus to try doing some recording in logic and it did just fine. The battery only got down to about 75%, and I turned it off. It was turned off for about two hours before we parked the bus and I got in my hotel. I plugged it in there, and it began to charge again. I noticed it had enough battery so I unplugged the AC adapter, and of course it died. I reset the PMU and it is now charging faster, (The battery is just fine, dc-in board is fine, ac adapter is relatively new), but still the computer dies when I unplug it, and the backup battery does not save time and date settings. Please help me! I have to start recording the next album soon.

iBook G4 12" 1.33 GHz: "Kernel Panic" message on screen

I have a used iBook G4. It's been working great for 2 months. One morning I booted it up and this screen came up with a message that states that I must restart the computer now. So, I turn the power button off and restart the computer. The screen is still frozen. Later another message appears under this message. After further investigation, I learn that this is a "Kernel Panic".

According to Wikipeida, a "kernel panic is an action taken by an operating system upon detecting an internal fatal error from which it cannot safely recover."

What can I do to fix this? I've tried holding down the shift key just before the grey screen comes up upon reboot, but it didn't work. The screen is still frozen.

I haven't added any software or removed any. I haven't downloaded any software. I was on Safari prior to it crashing.

Are there discs available to repair a "kernel panic"? Should I take out the OS and replace it? Should I add more RAM? Or, should I take it in and get it looked at by a professional? Would it cost a lot of money? Is it even worth taking it in and repaired, or should I buy another mac?

I hope somebody out there can help me 'cause this is really bothering me. I've been without my Mac now for 2 weeks. Using my husbands IBM PC and really miss my Mac. Thanks. Rose
