MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: OEM SATA 3 6G cable not good enough for 6G

I recently upgraded to a OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD drive. After a clean install of 10.8.3, I found that I would get beach balls all the time. Tried the same install with an Intel Series 520 SSD, same results. After hours of research I found that the OEM cable has issues running at 6G and gets crosstalk from the battery indicator cable that is in the same harness. I was able to alleviate the issue for time being using 2 sheets of Reynolds Wrap to shield the SATA cable.

I want to know if this replacement part sold on ifixit would resolve this issue so I don't have to use the redneck shielding method? Does anybody know if it's shielded well enough to handle the 6G bandwidth and not get interference from the other cable?

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: What material is the heat sink, copper or Aluminium?

Hi I am thinking in putting a Coollaboratory Liquid MetalPad as I heard it is one of the best in cooling cpus and gpus. But I read that it corrodes and eats the aluminum really quick. I was wondering, whats the heat sink material from my computer. I already have replaced the thermal paste and it looks like copper, but many heat sinks are made from aluminum but painted to look like copper, thank for your help.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Power button does not work.

My sons MBP 15, sustained a coffe spill. Power button did not work. I cleaned logic board and case. was able to start computer only after connecting to the DC power adapter. Everything works - hard drive, display, DVD, all keys -except the power button. Power button will not shut down computer. I can restart and shut down through OS. If I shut down I have to open case, disconnect battery for a few seconds, reconnect DC adapter, and computer will restart. I looked at button inside case and it seems to work mechanically. Can anyone please help me? Should I try to disassemble and clean entire keyboard? Is this a logic board problem?

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Coffee spill on the bottom of my MacBook - screen went black

Help!

This is my second liquid offense against my beloved Macbook. You think I would've learned my lesson the first time I spent $900 to fix it!

I spilled some coffee on my desk and it got on the bottom half of the laptop (the coffee was behind it). I quickly picked it up, but the screen was already black. I quickly powered off. Right now it is upside down with the bottom case off.I don't seem to have any of the right equipment to take off the small little screws. There was still some residual liquid on the inside. I dried it off. I do not plan on turning it on for at least 48 hours.

Anything else I can do right now to help save it?

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: I can't format my new HDD (installed in the optical drive)

I recently replaced my failing hard drive with a Samsung 840 SSD (500GB) and wanted to replace the Superdrive with a new 1 TB HGST Travelstar hard drive.

After putting in the SSD and restoring from a time machine backup, everything seemed to work fine.

However, after putting the hard drive in, I couldn't find it under "Devices", probably because it wasn't formatted. I wanted to use Disk Utilities to format it. I tried the method with the "Erase" button as well as the "Partition" method, but every time I tried, a window would pop up telling me: "Unable to write to the last block of the device."

I called the manufacturer of the hard drive and they told me it might be the hard drive itself. So before I'm sending it back, I wanted to know if it might be something else. Can anyone help me? I hope this is the right place, since I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem.. Thank you so much

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Why are number keys 1-9 not working?

I just replaced the uppercase on my Macbook Pro with a unibody piece from iFixit. On installation, everything went smoothly and the computer booted normally. However, when prompted to enter my password, I realized that certain numbers were not working. I used a wireless keyboard to gain access, and then proceeded to test EVERY key on the keyboard only to conclude that the number keys 1-9 and their subsequent SHIFT+ commands are not working, while all of the other keys remain fine. Any suggestions as to what to do? Is it a system problem or a hardware problem? The Upper Body is brand new from iFixit, just got it in the mail today.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Internal audio circuit dead.

Hi,

I probably blew the audio circuit in my MBP by connecting the output of an amplifier to the mic input of the MBP. ;-(

I know this is really stupid but I was using a software oscilloscope to test the amplifier and got carried away by the sine waves.

Now the MBP doesn't show any input or output devices anymore. Just as if the circuitry was absent. I suspect that the audio circuit got overloaded and burnt up.

Is there a remote possibility that the audio circuit has a protection (i.e. fuse) that could be replaced ?

Than's for your insight.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Why does the wifi only work intermittently?

I have a Late 2011 15" Macbook Pro with a 2.2 Ghz i7 with Mountain Lion. About a week ago, I started having wifi issues where the computer would suddenly disconnect from the wifi network and turn off the Airport Card. The indicator on the menu bar would still show that it was connected to the network, but the status in the Network preferences pane would show the card was actually off. The card could not be turned on unless the computer was restarted and plugged into the power adapter.

So far, this is what I have found out:

1. The computer will only exhibit this behavior if used as a portable. If it sits on the laptop stand on my desk and is not moved, then the wifi works perfectly. Once it is moved, everything fails.

2. If the computer is started up with battery power only AND not moved, the computer will not recognize the wifi card at all ("no hardware installed").

3. I have wiped the hard drive and installed different versions of OSX on the computer, but the issue still persists.

4. I have opened up the computer, made sure all the connections between the logic board and the Airport card and the antennas are secure.

5. Even when wifi fails, the bluetooth still works. If I am correct, wifi and bluetooth are on the same card.

6. And of course, I have tried multiple PRAM resets, SMC resets, anything I could think of.

Any help is appreciated!

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Does changing Logic Board also change WiFi MAC address?

I was under the impression that the WiFi MAC address is stored in firmware on the computer.
MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Spilled vodka on my new unibody MacBook Pro 15'' (late 2011)

A week ago I bought a new Macbook pro 15'' unibody late 2011 model and two days ago I spilled 20 ml of pure vodka on the eject key of the keyboard. My first instinct was of course to panic and I didn't turn it off till about 5 minutes later. And I know this is bad, but I turned it on almost immediately again. While I was logging on I realized that my o and k keys had stopped working. So I turned it off. The next thing I did was to disassemble it. I noticed that my battery was wet and certain other parts were too. So I got a cotton cloth and wiped it gently until it was dry. My next move was to take the hard drive out and even though I had dried my battery, I did not have a screwdriver with which to unscrew it and take it out. So I did what I could. I left it in there. I then proceeded to cover my hard drive in rice and I also left my laptop flipped and on top of rice. Now, it is 2 days later and after reassembling my pro, it won't turn on. But I can see it charging. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Or what might be wrong with it?

Late 2011 MBP fell off my desk while in the closed position. It's working fine save for the cosmetic nuisance i.e. a spidercrack in the display glass that I've managed to keep together using a ZAGG iPad screen protector.

Only options here on site are for total LCD replacement nothing for the top glass only?

It's not as though the LCD is glued to the glass like the new Iphones and Imacs so just wondering why or where I could find such a part without the unnecessary LCD.

Thanks,

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Camera not working after damage liquid.

Hello,

I just got back my macbook after having spilled some coffe on the keyboard (the A-CMD-CTRL area). I went to the assistance, they opened it and told me that the system was ok, but there were just some not working keys. With my happy surprise, the keyboard works perfectly, but the only thing that seems not working is the camera. The laptop does not recognise it, also in the system profile is not recognised. So my question is the following: is it possible that the coffee damaged only the camera cable, and anything else, or is there the possibility that they did not connect the cable? I would like to open the case and just take a look, but I am quite afraid to damage something else.. moreover, if the assistance was so incompetent to forget about it, i would ask them to fix it.

every idea welcome

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Why can't I start up after top case replacement?

I replaced my top case and it seemed to go smoothly. The only issue was that I may have initially reconnected the keyboard ribbon incorrectly by sliding it under the connector rather than into it.

Upon my first attempt to power up, I got to the login screen with the keyboard back light on but the keyboard was unresponsive so I could not log in (the trackpad did work, though).

I examined the keyboard ribbon connection and reconnected it in the way that seemed correct this time. When powering on this time, the process got stuck at the gray, spinning wheel screen. I've tried several times with the same results. Disconnecting the keyboard ribbon altogether and powering up that way still produces the same gray screen result.

Any ideas?

I had a bit of a spill the other day. Everything is working fine thanks to the tips of the many questions regarding spills here and on other sites.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Dark brown patch at the middle of LCD panel when black displayed.

Product : MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011

Context : I left my closed MacBook near my bed. When I woke up, I put one foot on it (at back of the screen assembly, where the apple is), with little pressure, as I was sitting at my bed and as I immediatly felt the MacBook under my foot.

Symptoms : Since then, when a black (or very very dark) color is displayed on the MacBook screen, there's a diffuse dark brown patch in the center, looking like dust patch the keyboard might left on your screen when it's left closed and opened later, except it doesn't dissapear with some cleaning.

Question : how can I make this patch disappear, or what piece of the display assembly can I change to repair that ?

I tried to clean the screen panel with a duster, I also tried to apply presure on the screen panel with my finger where the patch appears and I tried to run various software based dead-pixel fixers. Without any effect.

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Do you think it is fixable?

I found a great deal on a MacBook Pro 2.5 Quad i7 from a friend for $400, only it is water damaged. I can repair almost any Apple problem easily but I hate water damage. The computer boots every time and charges the battery but will only display on an external monitor. When on an external monitor everything works and it runs with out a hitch. The screen stays completely black during this whole time with no backlight but briefly flashes the screen every time it is turned on. I haven't been able to look inside but my question is, does anyone think that i can just clean off the board and LVDS contacts and maybe replace the lcd cable and have to and have it work. Could anything be completely destroyed on the logic board. I have fixed several iPhones that have been submerged in the past but never a computer. Do you think i can fix it?

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Removing the glass from the trackpad

Hello to all think alike minds!!

I would like to know if its possible to remove the glass from the trackpad on macbook pro unibody

My main goal is that I'm trying to color my macbook like colorware does. only they are not available at my country so I decided to do it myself (half way done //colored the entire body and back of the screen) but i have no ideas how they do it on the trackpad.

from what i have figured so far is that the trackpad is colored(originally) much like the glass parts of the iPhone 4/4s.from the other side of the glass)

i don't know if its possible to remove the glass of the trackpad from the sensor pad it attached to and color it (without losing the sensitivity) but i do know that colorWARE does it somehow!

maybe on top of the glass ??

any thoughts and suggestions would be highly appreciated

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: After spill no internal video but external video works.

A bottle of pop had a leakage in my bag where my MacBook Pro also was. So I dried it but it started behaving strange. Suddenly the video went black and it would not charge. I took it to a Apple service center and they said the logic board was bad. (no guarantee, a fortune of money).

I replaced the Magsafe card since there was no light when I connected a charger. The MBP starts up now and works fine - on external screen only. The internal screen is black.

I then purchased a new LVDS (video) cable and changed it. Cleaned the connector on the logic board. No luck. I even tried with a known working display. Internal video is just black.

So I guess there is no use to buy a new LCD? Does anyone know if the logic board can be damaged in a way that external video works but internal does not?

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011: Is it a battery failure?

I seem to be getting mixed answers from repair officials. This Mac is still under warranty. So I ask you to help me with your experience so that I'm not cheated.

My Macbook Pro powers down completely, instead of going to sleep, after running out of battery. This last time it didn't even have time to save memory to disk and when I pressed the battery meter button on the side of the macbook, no lights appeared.

Is this usually related to a faulty battery or is it the logic board?

Update

Hi to all that replied and thank you so much.

The last 3 letters of my macbook serial number are V7L.

The system version is 10.7.3 All firmware updates are up to date to.

I have reset the SMC and PRAM.

Also I have reinstalled the system software from scratch.

I purchased this macbook on the 13 of January of the current year.

I don't have the macbook with me now but I remember that I have already made 30 cycles on the battery.

I have at least 100GB free on the hard disk.

Maybe it's the power management settings that got corrupt but I remember resetting them.

Again thank you all so much
