Mac Mini Model A1347: SSD in the optibay as the primary disk for OS X

Can I use an SSD in the optibay as the primary disk for OS X? I have a Mac mini mid 2010, and would like to replace the optical drive to an SSD with an optibay. In your 2nd hdd installation guide, you put the SSD into the optibay. It seems like you can use the SSD as a primary disk for OS X becuase most people use the SSD for the OS. Or should I connect the SSD to where the old HDD is placed and the old HDD to the optibay?

Thanks.

Mac Mini Model A1347: How can I replace the PRAM battery?

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to replace the battery receptor or create a hinge to lock the battery in place on a Mac Mini 2010. I tried electric tape and just heard it move when I moved it. I also have 2011 model that was given to me because the fan receptor was pulled out. Does anyone know if that can be soldered back down?
Mac Mini Model A1347: Harddisk Temperature Sensor broken

Hello,

i broke the temperature sensor of the harddisk, while replacing it. the small board with the smd sensor broke in two peaces.

So where can i get a replacement? Or i can i simply solder a normal temperature dependent resistor?

Mac mini Model A1347: Is it possible to adapt the wireless connector to expresscard?

About the Mac Mini Unibody A1347:

I think it would be very very very good if Apple added an Expresscard slot in the Mac Mini. Sadly, Apple didn't.

I was wondering if the connection of the wireless card is just a PCI-Express lane on a different connector cable. If it is, theoretically it would be possible to convert it into an ExpressCard slot right?

Of course, it would involve milling the aluminum enclosure and whatnot, but has any tinkerer looked into it to see if it is feasible?

Mac Mini Model A1347: loose wire floating around - can I post a pic?

I replaced my hard drive. But I have a loose wire floating around. I took a picture but it doesn't look like I can post it here. I can boot up the computer but it doesn't find the new disk i installed - so i'm thinking that my loose wire is to blame.

The wire in question is connected via a connector to the board- but the other end has a small circuit board on it and is floating around. It looks identical to one that is attached (just glued?) to the hard disk connector. it looks easy enough to replace - if I knew what it was supposed to be attached to. Just need to know what part to buy. :-)

For reference, I bought this computer from someone who had already taken in apart once - so I can't be sure the wires were intact when i took it apart. I can easily point out what I'm talking about with a picture.

The directions on this site were awesome! Very easy - only problem is that damned wire!

Mac Mini Model A1347: How to diagnose random freezes (prob hardware based)?

I've got a mid-2010 Mac Mini which had been flawless up until a week or two ago. Now, roughly once a day, I'm getting total random freezes. When the freezes happen, sometimes everything just stops (mouse won't move). Sometimes video goes berserk (horizontal lines of different colors). For this reason, I'm suspecting some kind of hardware failure.

Mac Mini Model A1347: Upgrading Both Hard Drives.

Mac Mini Model A1347: Fan is stuck on high speed, ODD heat sensor pulled off motherboard

While swapping a hard drive, I broke the optical drive heat sensor socket from the logic board at four tiny solder points. I wish I'd found ifixit.com first, because their procedure avoids detaching the optical drive heat sensor. I attempted to use non-permanent glue to bring the socket into contact with the raised solder bumps on the logic board, but that didn't work. So I removed the glue and put a small piece of electrical tape around the optical drive SATA connector (so that the cowling would not seat the SATA connecter when reassembled) and I reassembled the Mini with the new drive in place. When I completed the installation and started the Mini, the fan immediately came on at full speed.

SMCFanControl indicates 5500 rpm and a temp of 31 degrees C. System Profiler indicates that the system recognizes that there is NO optical drive. I reopened the Mini and checked that all of the remaining connectors were properly seated. iStat Pro indicates that the heat sensors for all other components are operating correctly and reporting temps between 23C (ambient) and 32C (CPU). Apple Hardware Test reports error code 4SNS/1/c0000008: T00P--124, which I interpret as an error related to the optical drive heat sensor.

The Mac Mini functions perfectly in all respects except the constant fan at 5500 rpm and I have no optical drive. The Scorpio Blue is much more responsive, everything works and I spend much less time waiting for the spinning beach ball to complete tasks. Third party fan controllers are useless, as they will not lower the fan speed. Putting the computer to sleep from the Apple menu shuts the fan down completely. Wakeup restarts the fan immediately.

I've performed the correct sequence for SMC reset, which did not help (SMC Version system is 1.65f2). I've booted into SAFE mode, then restarted normally, which did not help. I've performed a PRAM reset through five startup chimes, no luck. The Mac Mini firmware is up-to-date. I do not have sufficient soldering skill to reattach the heat sensor connector to the motherboard (there are two conducting pads and two more mounting pads within the space of 2 mm). Will the system think that the optical drive heat sensor is present if I connect (short) the two solder pads on the motherboard for the broken optical drive heat sensor? Will that solve the problem or kill the motherboard?

Mac mini Model A1347: Difficulty in re-installing Antenna Plate

Thanks to the [Mac Mini Mid 2010 Hard Drive Replacement|hard drive replacement guide, I managed to replace the hard drive with Intel X25-M 80g SSD and it works great!

However, I encountered difficulty in re-installing the Antenna Plate, particularly the two 5.0mm T8 Torx on both sides. While it was originally perfectly fit (when I tried to remove the antenna plate), it is now re-installed with only one side of the T8 torx on either one side and the two 6.6mm T8 screws in the bottom part, leaving one 5.0mm screw uninstalled. Though my mac mini worked perfectly fine without that screw.

I don't think I have damaged or transformed the antenna plate and I believe that the antenna plate was not perfectly fit out of the box. Do anyone of you encounter this problem? Any solution?

Mac Mini Model A1347: Broken Thermal Sensor on Logicboard

Looking for feedback to my problem. I recently upgraded my Mac Mini Mid 2010 with 8GB of RAM and an OWC SSD drive.

In the process of unseating one of the thermal sensors for the hard drive, the entire connection broke off the motherboard. With the broken sensor the fan now spins at 5500 RPM's constantly.

Mac mini Model A1347: How to connect the fan?

maybe you can help me. I bought a used mac mini 2010 (A1347), the system fan was soldered directly to the mainboard by the former owner.

But due to that it always runs at full speed and the software recognizes 0 rpm, I assume that the wires are soldered in a wrong order.

According to the numbering in the picture, which wire has to be in which order on the mainboard (beginning with the side where the RAM is located)

2. Reseated RAM (1 stick)

3. Swapped RAM slots

4. Connected to another Mac via Target mode and formatted the disk with a bootable image of Snow Leopard. Booted holding Option, selected disk image. Still panics.

5. Swapped hard disk with known working disk, then did step 4. Still panics.

I can't boot from optical because the optical drive won't accept media.
